STRENGTH OF YEARS

Hackney, London

Created during a darkroom workshop course with the Firestation Darkroom and Future Hackney.

As we age, movement becomes more critical than ever—yet we rarely see fitness represented by people over the age of 60. This series aims to correct that imbalance, making older movement communities and individuals in Hackney more visible. It will be an ongoing project based in my local community over the coming year featuring a range of empowering stories.

The project opens with Norma, an 81 year old actor, writer and dancer who practices Feldenkrais, Pilates and Tai Chi. Spending a few days with her at home and in her Pilates studio provided an intimate window into her world. Her strength, energy and zest for life reframes the narratives around ageing, proving that connecting with our physical bodies only grows more vital with time.

"Having a daily movement practice keeps me supple, strong and revitalised" - Norma Cohen

Ultimately, this work is a celebration of longevity, designed to inspire all generations to find joy in physical movement.
